| 106 | He was an MD and was the right hand of the finest MD's when he was in residency. A brilliant student he was offered a residency in Hematology by Mario Steffanini in the Boston area - a very desirable position. He refused as he did not want to practice where 9 out of 10 diagnoses would be tragic. He became the right hand man of Dr. Gunderson, who was the finest teacher of Opthamology in Boston. He then spun off and refused to build a practice that was based on 6 different rooms and making piles of money - he did not want that kind of practice. He was notorious in the field for not having the money he could have made. For example he would sit down with an older woman for 30 or 45 minutes just to learn about problems with her eyes. | Pearlson, Harrison (I1911)

| 114 | Hilary (born 16 August 1951) had flu and bronchitis last year Rosh Hashanah. Neglect by the Edenvale Hospital for a few months resulted in double pneumonia and the need for oxygen 24/7 until the end. The Edenvale Hospital also failed to investigate Hilary's request as to what the small swelling on her shoulder near neck was which the JHB Hospital found was a small cancerous lymph gland. Chemo / radiation could not be done on admittance to the JHB Hospital earlier this year due to the bad state of her lungs which were full of water, but radiation was about to be done regardless, when she passed away. Also old puss next to her heart had prevented her heart from beating properly. She slept sitting up in a large easy chair leaning forwards or could not breathe and was exhausted with swollen legs and feet. | Flax, Hilary Deborah (I2475)

| 119 | I was then adopted out to the Lewis family who lived near Witbank, we moved to Witbank about a year later. I spent my time there up until high school, we then decided it would be better if I go to boarding school which was in Belfast. I thought it was a dump until I saw where you went to boarding school. Stayed there for two years and refused to go back as there was quite a bit of abuse going on there. You talk about being English in a predominantly Afrikaans society. Being 6”4, I did not get a lot of bullying from Afrikaans students (just a little) however there were some teachers who did not like us “Soaties” and being Jewish just put the cherry on the top. At the beginning of the next year my parents also demanded that I go back to Belfast High (I did not disclose exactly what was happening there) so I packed a bag and hitch hiked to Durban. - Talk about rebel, I was often accused of being one. And the black sheep ????. Anyway i had family in Durban - (My grandmother lived on the Marine Parade - damn those were nice holidays) and they spotted me there. Went back to school in Witbank and later found out the teachers that liked abusing us were expelled from the school so I could have gone back. (Hindsight is often a bugger ????) Once I had completed St 8 I decided I would go work for a living and would finish schooling doing night classes. By then my parents had divorced by then and we weren’t seeing eye to eye anyway. Don’t what to seem ungrateful but quite often adoptive children are quite different to there adoptive parents. We were totally different ????. I then started an apprenticeship at the steel works near Witbank and a year later started my army training. Anyway carried on with life living between Witbank/Middleburg and met Marcel around 1995. Growing up I enjoyed running so eventually landed up running marathons including a couple of comrades marathons. When I eventually landed up with too many sporting related injuries I included cycling as a sport and completed a couple of Argus bike tours in Cape town and some triathlons. I remember Warren saying he enjoyed cycling ?. In 1981 I also injured myself by hitting truck whilst commuting home on my motor bike after work. I was only doing around 140km/h. (damn hooligan). Was very lucky as the Dr said I broke everything in my neck expect my spinal cord. Eventually I had a titanium swivel disk inserted in my neck as my disks were fusing themselves. | Lewis, Michael (I4933)

I left to avoid the draft, and spent about 10 years in business in the UK working as a programmer, project leader, and IT manager. I re-entered academia in 1992 as a lecturer in IT subjects. I currently lecture on the "IT in Organisations" degree programme, jointly presenting introductory and advanced modules on eLearning and Technology Enhanced Learning. My book (co-authored with Veronica Gale) "Principles of e-Learning Systems Engineering" (Chandos, 2008) integrates my business-oriented practical experience of Information Systems development with Multimedia and Computer Aided Instruction development. I have completed two textbooks dealing with Information Technology at Advanced GNVQ level. The first comprises the second edition of a student textbook (de Watteville & Gilbert, 2000) which, in its first edition, apparently was the UK's top seller in its sector according to its publisher, Heinemann. The second is a Tutor Resource File (Gilbert & de Watteville, 2000) to accompany the student textbook, aimed at supporting the tutors who teach the Advanced GNVQ IT programme. My extra-mural interests include radio-controlled racing yachts. I am collaborating with Graham Bantock on a significant text, provisionally titled "Radio Sailing: Design, Build, Race". Graham is the pre-eminent world authority on such craft, and the text is intended to define the sport and its background theory for the next decade. I have been selected to the Great Britain team at recent World and Continental championships in the IOM and "A" classes.
