  He was an MD and was the right hand of the finest MD's when he was in residency. A brilliant student he was offered a residency in Hematology by Mario Steffanini in the Boston area - a very desirable position. He refused as he did not want to practice where 9 out of 10 diagnoses would be tragic. He became the right hand man of Dr. Gunderson, who was the finest teacher of Opthamology in Boston. He then spun off and refused to build a practice that was based on 6 different rooms and making piles of money - he did not want that kind of practice. He was notorious in the field for not having the money he could have made. For example he would sit down with an older woman for 30 or 45 minutes just to learn about problems with her eyes.
