He (CHAIM MOSHE CHAIMOWITZ), with his father, owned a bottle store, which bottle store and contents was confiscated by the Russian authorities as no-one was allowed to own property. They received no compensation . Aunty Anne Nay doesn't know what the father (her great grandfather) did thereafter. But her grandfather, Chaim Moshe Chaimowitz, her mother's father (her mother: Janie (Sheina Rocha) Chaimowitz (Flax), who was very religious, wore the "black dress" and prayed 3 x per day - became a melamed: a teacher of Hebrew and Jewish studies.
· How the Chaimowitz (Samovitz) name changed to Snoyman was when
· Jacob Chaimowitz changed his name from Chaimowitz (Samowitz) because
· In London they used to get teased about their surname Samovitz … Sunovabitz …
· Jacob (Yankel Schneur Chaimowitz) took his middle name and created a new surname - Schneurman.
· His brother, Harry, also adopted the surname Schneurman.
· In South Africa the name Schneurman became Snoyman.
· But all their sisters remained Chaimowitz (Samovitz).
