- From Vivienne Press nee Segall:
You asked about the child my parents lost before me. She was a girl
born three years before me. Her name was Shulamit and she died at the
age of three months. My parents went through a very bad time then,
from what I can gather. My mother was very ill in hospital after
Shulamit was born with "milk fever" (quite a rare illness even in those
days). The baby had to go to hospital with her as there was no-one to
look after her at home and she contracted gastro-enteritis there. She
was one of six babies who died from it in the hospital at the time.
My parents didn't talk much about it - as I say, it must have been a
terrible time for them. My mother was in hospital for quite a long
time, in a clinic in Cape Town, I think. My parents remembered my
sister at times like just before my wedding they mentioned her. My
mother told me about her, that she was a pretty blonde baby with blue
eyes and that everybody adored her. She was the first grandchild on
both Segall and Goldberg sides (born even before you). Late Granny
Sonia used to catch two buses to my mom's house to come and bath her (or
so my mom told me).
